I’ve been the owner of an FLSUN QQ-S Pro printer for the last year, but as time has gone by, some of the printer’s shortcomings have come to light.
Why build one
My gripes with the factory setup:
- A lack of documentation for the factory board, and A4988 stepper drivers (this has been addressed since)
- A lack of CAD files for designing additional components/upgrades
- The movement system has an inherent flex, as 2×8 mm rods aren’t stiff enough at these lengths
- The sheet metal construction behaves like an amplifier when the movement hits those resonant frequencies, which is always fun to listen to…
These and the limited space available led me to the decision to design my own printer. Since Kossel-style printers have open-source components, I’ve decided to use that as a starting point, which resulted in this monster:
The plan
As you can see from the design, it uses a Duet 2 Wifi and a Duet Smart Effector, which I’m going to source from my QQ-S upgrades, and the whole thing will run on Klipper. So there’s no real need for a screen, because any device on the local network with a screen and a browser can double as an interface.
The frame itself is a combination of your standard 2020/2040/2060 OpenBuilds V-Slot extrusions and Kossel-style corner parts printed (for the moment) from PETG with 70% infill. They feel solid enough for now (and I’m cheap and don’t want to spend on ABS).
